I tried and failed to get a good copy of the movie which is why, my blog will focus on the "haunted" technologhy in the movie. THe movie was scary being a horror movie, compounded with the blue filter making everything look grey and dull. However, the use of the telephone in the movie was extremely scary because each time someone watched the tape of the ring, they would get a phone call that the person would die in seven days. So, each time someone watched the tape, the audience would be anticipating with fear, "the dreader call of death". Another "haunted" technology as discussed in class was the cellphone. Cellphones never work when needed the most. One way to look at it is that it is obvious, because it is a horror movie, fears must be faced alone. However, the first time watching the movie, the audience would surely be cursing the cellphone company, imagining themselves in place of the actors. Finally, the tape itself is a digital technology. Its mystery of course begins with the "legend" behind it. However, once the tape is watched by Rachel (in the movie) and then investigated, quite a few surprises come up. Firstly, the housefly on the screen. For a moment, it made me wish I turned off the movie (especially since I was watching it at 2 am and the scene through the window was dreary and scary enough for me to miss a heartbeat). Another "fact" that Rachel was introduced to while researching the tape was that the numbers on the the tape player appeared garbled which would mean that the whole tape was recorded using a device which was "not of world".
All these digital technologies of horror add another dreary side to the movie and enhance the scary experience.
This is a class blog for my English class. Feel free to read through and comment. But no SPAM please.
